What Is an Energy Recovery Ventilator, and Why Use One?

We’ve gotten off  to a pretty hot start this summer season, which means that you are likely running your air conditioning system with great regularity. Naturally, you want to cool your home in the most effective and efficient manner possible. That is why you’ve likely sealed your home up tightly to prevent heat from forcing its way in through your thermal envelope.

The issue with this, though, is that doing so can actually prove to be quite detrimental for your indoor air quality. You need sufficient ventilation in your home in order to maintain the great indoor air quality that you deserve. With the use of an energy recovery ventilator in Fresno, CA, you can enjoy an efficient cooling performance without putting your indoor air quality in jeopardy.

How Does It Work?

An energy recovery ventilator is a mechanical ventilation device. Unlike, say, an exhaust fan, though, the ERV helps to bring fresh air into your home while also protecting the investment that you’ve made in the energy used to condition the outgoing air. It accomplishes this by using that outgoing air to precondition the air coming into the house.

During the summer season, your indoor air will likely get stale and dry, as your system does dehumidify that air as it cools it. An ERV will vent that old air out of your home, and use that outgoing air in order to absorb heat from the incoming, fresh air. This takes some of the strain off of your air conditioner, as the air is already cooler than it otherwise would be. Plus, the ERV mixes the airstreams just enough to balance humidity, as well.

During our mild winter season, there are still times when you are going to need to heat your home, too. An ERV is just as helpful in the winter as in the summer. The outgoing warm air will transfer its heat to the fresh, but chilly incoming air. Again, humidity will be optimized, as well.
