Ultraviolet light is usually a bad thing, unless you’re trying to kill germs in your home. Cleaning Your Air with Ultraviolet Light

The key to UV lighting, and what makes UV germicidal lighting so different from other kinds of air cleaners, is the use of UV–C rays.  This type of ray, which is also emitted by the sun but filtered out by our atmospheric layers, can eradicate biological contaminants in your HVAC system. You don’t have to worry that UV lighting is dangerous for you; these lights are placed in specific areas that you are not in contact with, and they aren’t strong enough to hurt you. However, they do quite a job on biological organisms like mold, mildew, fungus and all other biological contaminants. This is because UV–C rays do two things at once: first, they mutate the organism’s DNA so that it can’t reproduce, and second, they kill all the life–sustaining proteins in the cell so that it can’t survive. The end result is total eradication of that contaminant.

Can I Use UV Lights for Allergens and Other Contaminants?

Simply put, UV germicidal lights only work on biological entities, so they won’t help with other types of contamination. They also don’t draw contaminants to them; they are stationary, so contaminants must pass under the light to be affected. For these reasons, it’s highly recommended that UV lights are paired with another type of indoor air quality product, such as an electronic air cleaner or an air filtration system. Creating a pairing like this for your home gives you the 1–2 punch that ensures your home’s air will be clean and healthy.
