Cut Your Winter Heating Bills with These Helpful Tips

Cut Your Winter Heating Bills with These Helpful TipsIn order to cut your winter heating bills, you need to take a look at your entire home and develop a plan to help make it more energy efficient. There are plenty of ways you can cut your utility bills, but they may be expensive, such as replacing old windows with new ones, or having spray-on insulation installed in your attic.

Here are a few tips that can help you save more money without having to invest a lot of money into the project.

Turn Down the Thermostat

Moving your thermostat down even just 1 degree can help save you money during the winter. For most people, a 1 degree difference isn’t even noticeable, especially if you’re wearing a long-sleeved shirt. You can also try turning the thermostat down even more at night and just adding an extra blanket to your bed.

Adjust the Hot Water Heater

Your water heater can usually be adjusted down a little bit to help conserve energy. This won’t have an effect on the cleanliness of your clothing or dishes. Plus, the key to being comfortable in the shower is to reduce the amount of cold water you’d usually use to balance out the hot water.

Caulk Around Old Windows

Air leakage around windows, which have not been properly maintained, can let heated air escape from your home, or invite cold air in. A tube of silicone caulking can be found for less than $5, and most come with warranties for 10 or more years.
