Change-Of-Season Projects That Prepare Your Home For Cooler Weather

preparing your home for cooler weather fresno californiaFall is well underway, and now’s the perfect time to prepare your home for cooler weather that’s on the way. Before winter arrives, take time to complete some preventive maintenance projects that will protect your home and keep you comfortable through the cooler weather.

Check your insulation: Look in your attic to make sure you have adequate insulation. It should come to the top of your floor joists. Consult with a reliable HVAC technician for the right type and amount of insulation for our climate.

Check doors and windows: Proper weatherstripping around doors and window sashes will keep warm air in and cool air out. If your windows and doors are not sealed, you can get cold air drafts that will increase your heating costs and allow water leaks in rainy weather that will damage your windows.

Check the ducts: Proper sealing of air ducts in basements, attics, garages and crawlspaces can conserve energy and cut utility costs. Up to 30 percent of your heat can be lost due to improperly insulated ducts.

Check for air leaks: Walk the interior perimeter of your home with a lighted incense stick. The smoke will waver at spots where air leaking. Use caulk, spray foam or weatherstripping to seal the leaks, depending on the situation.

Check the roof: Inspect the roof for leaks and damage. Inspect all openings in the roof, such as skylights and chimneys. Check the attic for signs of water damage or leaks. Use caulk or spray foam to seal any areas that need repair.

Check gutters and downspouts: Inspect gutters and clear away dirt, debris and leaves to prevent water backup and damage. Inspect downspouts and replace all damaged or loose pieces.
