Setting one thermostat temperature for an entire home isn’t going to cut it, especially if you live in a larger or multiple-story home. You’ve probably noticed that certain areas of your home are always warmer or cooler than the rest. Luckily, a zoning system design is a fairly simple solution to most home heating and cooling inconsistencies.
Instead of setting one temperature, with a zoning system homeowners can enjoy multiple thermostats, which are wired to a control panel. Each thermostat is continually checking the temperature of the area in its zone. If the temperature is inconsistent with the rest of the home, dampers within your home ductwork will either block or release airflow.
There are many uncontrollable factors that can contribute to the need for a zoning system design. For example, rooms facing south or west and rooms with multiple windows receive more sunlight and thus become warmer than rooms facing east and north. Interior rooms devoid of windows or finished basements where cool air settles also remain cooler throughout the year.
There is the fact that heat rises, referred in the industry as the Stack Effect. This is why you may often discover that the upstairs of your home is much warmer than the lower levels – and you may also find that rooms with high ceilings have a much more difficult time retaining heat.
