Should I Be Concerned About Short Cycling?

Yes, you absolutely should be. There are a lot of different problems that may develop with your home cooling system. If the system is still capable of cooling your home effectively, though, you may be tempted to ignore what you see as “quirks” in its performance. The fact of the matter, though, is that you are putting your air conditioning system at serious risk by doing so.

If your air conditioner is starting up and shutting down very quickly, only to start up again before long, it is short cycling. This condition is much more than a minor annoyance. Chances are that you need some type of air conditioning repair in Hanford, CA.

As is the case with most air conditioning problems, there are a number of potential causes of short cycling. Having the situation and your system assessed and evaluated by professional technicians is the only way in which to get to the bottom of the matter. Not every issue is very serious, but the need for accurate diagnosing certainly is.

  • Thermostat malfunctions could be the root cause of short cycling. If your thermostat is not registering the temperature correctly, it may be signalling the system to shut down prematurely. Calibrating, or perhaps replacing, the thermostat can resolve the problem.
  • A very dirty air filter could be to blame, as well. Simply replacing it and doing so more diligently may be enough to get your AC back on track. When your air filter is too dirty, it can restrict airflow, impeding the heat transfer process and causing the compressor to overheat.
  • The same issue can be caused by refrigerant leaks, though, as there is just not enough refrigerant in the system to remove heat successfully. If this is the case, you risk doing very serious damage to your air conditioner by continuing with its operation.

Short cycling puts a lot of unnecessary strain on your system. It also drives up operating costs, as starting the system up uses more energy than keeping it running. This is not a problem to ignore.
