When Extending Ductwork Proves Impossible, Ductless Mini Splits Provide The Solution

When Extending Ductwork Proves Impossible, Ductless Mini Splits Provide The SolutionIf you have recently added new rooms to your house, you may be faced with the challenge of how you’re going to keep them comfortable. Extending your existing ductwork system to distribute conditioned air to them may prove architecturally impossible or way too expensive to seriously consider. This is an ideal situation for a ductless mini split system.

Ductless mini split systems rely on – as the name implies – a ductless conduit to distribute air into areas where you need additional heating and cooling. An outside compressor/condenser is connected by the conduit line to up to four different air handler units. These are installed in the areas where you want to extend heating and cooling.

Regular duct systems lose air easily through cracks and loose connections. In fact, homes lose up to 30 percent of their conditioned air due to duct leaks before the air ever arrives at its destination in your home.

Each air handler can be controlled with its own thermostat. This means that within your home, you can have rooms that have different temperatures, each according to the desires of the occupants. When the rooms are empty, you simply shut off the air handler to conserve energy.

To get the conduit into your house, your HVAC technician simply drills a small hole through each wall where you want to locate an air handler. You can then store the outside unit up to 50 feet away from your house so that it stays out of sight. This also helps you access multiple parts of your home with just one compressor/condenser.

A ductless mini split system can blend into your home easily. They can be mounted on a wall, suspended from the ceiling or just put on the floor. They also come with remote controls so you can adjust them more easily.
