Don’t Leave a Dirty Air Filter in Your Heater

If you use a forced air heating system, such as a furnace or a heat pump, then there is a filter in that system that needs to be changed out regularly. If you fail to keep a fresh filter in your system, you are going to notice some problems develop. These problems can be broken up into 3 distinct categories. Those affecting:

  • Efficiency
  • Air Quality
  • Overall Performance

As you’ll see in the following post, keeping a fresh air filter in your heater is a simple way in which to protect its operation. Give us a call if you have any questions about changing your air filter, which air filter to use, or your heating system in general.

When you have a dirty air filter in your heating system, your heater is going to be working harder than it should have to in order to force heated air through the system. This means that it will consume more energy than it should when heating your home. That will drag down the efficiency with which your heater operates. Buying new filters is going to be cheaper than paying inflated heating costs due to the extra work that a dirty old filter will force upon your heating system.

Paying more to heat your home is bad enough, but doing so while you watch the quality of the air in your home take a dip just adds insult to injury. Now, the standard filter in forced air heating systems is not a HEPA filter or anything like that. It will have a low MERV, and is not really designed to protect the quality of the air in your home. It’s there to benefit the system itself. If you don’t keep a fresh filter in your heater in Fresno, CA, though, it is likely that you will see some decline in your indoor air quality.

Finally, there is the performance of your heater to consider. One problem that very dirty filters can cause is short cycling. Heat will essentially be trapped in the system, which will cause the heater to cycle off before your home is sufficiently heated. Then, it will cycle back on to complete the job, only to shut back down in a vicious cycle.
