Signs of a Refrigerant Leak

It will be a while yet before we are squarely in the middle of the hottest weather of the year. That being said, though, you may already be using your AC on occasion, or will be in the coming weeks. If your system is leaking refrigerant, then you are not going to be able to do so with the outstanding results that you deserve. A refrigerant leak can be seriously detrimental to both the overall operational quality of your air conditioning system, and to the condition of your AC system itself. Learning to spot the signs of a refrigerant leak can benefit you greatly.

Lukewarm Air/Insufficient Cooling

Is your air conditioner cycling on just fine, but failing to distribute sufficiently cooled air throughout your home? That could be due to a refrigerant leak. An air conditioner does not generate cooled air. Instead, it uses its refrigerant cycle in order to remove heat from the air in your home. When the refrigerant goes outside, it condenses and releases the heat, while your system blows the cooled air throughout your living space. If you have a low refrigerant level, then the system will not be able to complete this cycle effectively.

Hissing Sounds

All it takes is a pinhole leak in a refrigerant line for serious problems to begin. That is also all that it takes for you to notice a problem with your system. You may hear a hissing sound coming from your AC cabinets, and that may be the sound of refrigerant being forced out of one such small leak. If you hear this strange sound, let us know right away.

Icing on the System

An air conditioner is designed to cool the air, so you may think that seeing ice develop on the system simply means that your air conditioner is doing its job really well. This could not be further from the truth, though. In actuality, this is a sign of low refrigerant levels, and that sufficient heat transfer is proving impossible. Let us resolve the problem before serious damage is done to your system.
