Purchasing HVAC Online — Three Reasons You Shouldn’t

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment is a costly investment that some homeowners want a way around. One way they hope to cut costs is buying HVAC appliances and components online. However, is this really a solution that pays off in the end? Here are three reasons to reconsider your decision to purchase HVAC equipment online:

Many HVAC contractors won’t install equipment that was bought online. Exceptions to this rule are rarely made, and when they are, installation and labor fees often are marked up considerably to make it worthwhile to the contractor. This means you are either left installing the complicated equipment on your own or putting all your money into an installation when you could have bought equipment with a warranty from a contractor instead.

Poor installation is the number one reason for lower efficiency and early system failure. Even if a contractor agrees to install your equipment, they can’t warranty the job because they can’t be sure where the product came from.

Legitimate manufacturers don’t warranty anything sold online. This means if you find a product online claiming to have a warranty, it probably isn’t true. HVAC equipment and components bought and sold online probably will not have the warranty that grants consumers peace of mind when they make a large investment. Therefore, the savings you enjoy from purchasing HVAC online is void after a single service where you are charged for labor and replacement parts.

You could spend unpaid time tracking down the manufacturer. If something goes wrong with the equipment you purchased online, you have two choices. You can either pay a reputable contractor for their time and energy to fix the equipment lacking a warranty, or spend valuable time tracking down the rep or manufacturer you made your purchase from. Your issue is not likely to be solved quickly this way, and you’ll waste time while probably feeling uncomfortable in your unheated or unconditioned home.
